In 404 CE, the first foreign medicine was imported into Japan from Korea, which has been deduced as being mostly herbal in nature.
During this time, waves of migration from the Korean peninsula brought Chinese technology and writings to the island nation. It was through these transplants that the native Japanese learned of Chinese medicine and acupuncture. As passageways between China and Japan became more open, the first formal introduction of acupuncture in Japan occurred in 562 by a Chinese monk name Zhi Cong. He made the trek across the Sea of China east and brought with him medical treatises on herbal medicine and acupuncture meridians including the Mingtang tu, also known as the Illustrated Manual of Channels, Collaterals, and Acupuncture Points.

Acupuncture And Herbs For Allergic Rhinitis: What Research Shows
Allergic rhinitis is a common inflammatory condition in which the immune system reacts to otherwise harmless substances such as pollen, dust mites, mold, or animal dander. Sneezing, nasal itching, congestion, watery discharge, and reduced smell can interfere with sleep, concentration, exercise, and everyday comfort. Seasonal symptoms may last for weeks, while perennial rhinitis can persist throughout the year.
Standard care often includes allergen avoidance, saline irrigation, antihistamines, intranasal corticosteroids, and, for selected patients, allergen immunotherapy. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are increasingly discussed as complementary approaches, particularly when symptoms remain troublesome or medication causes unwanted effects.
The research is encouraging in several areas, but it requires careful interpretation. Studies differ in diagnostic criteria, treatment schedules, herbal formulas, comparison groups, and outcome measures. A responsible review therefore needs to distinguish between symptom improvement, changes in inflammatory markers, and evidence that a treatment can modify the underlying allergic tendency.
Understanding The Condition
Allergic rhinitis develops when the nasal lining responds excessively to allergens. In many cases, immunoglobulin E helps initiate the reaction, leading to the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators. The result is swelling of the nasal tissues, increased mucus production, itching, and repeated sneezing. People with asthma, eczema, or a family history of atopy may have a greater susceptibility.
Symptoms can be intermittent or persistent, and they may be seasonal, perennial, or mixed. Nasal obstruction is especially important because it can contribute to mouth breathing, poor sleep, headaches, and daytime fatigue. Children may show difficulty concentrating or changes in school performance rather than describing congestion directly.
From a Chinese medicine perspective, practitioners commonly assess the pattern behind the presentation rather than treating the symptom label alone. Lung qi deficiency, retained phlegm-dampness, wind, or an underlying weakness associated with the Spleen or Kidney systems may be considered. These traditional diagnostic categories are not direct equivalents of biomedical immune mechanisms, but they guide individualized acupuncture point selection and herbal prescribing.
What Acupuncture Studies Suggest
Clinical trials generally evaluate acupuncture by comparing it with sham acupuncture, medication, no treatment, or usual care. Several randomized studies and systematic reviews report reductions in nasal symptoms and improvements in quality of life, particularly when acupuncture is compared with no treatment. Benefits against sham acupuncture are usually smaller, which indicates that expectation, practitioner contact, and nonspecific effects may contribute to the outcome.
Some research has found that acupuncture may improve nasal obstruction, sneezing, itching, and watery discharge after a course of treatment. Follow-up findings occasionally suggest that benefits continue for several weeks after treatment ends, although the durability of the effect is not established consistently. Treatment schedules vary widely, from weekly sessions to several treatments per week over four to eight weeks.
Possible mechanisms under investigation include modulation of autonomic nerve activity, changes in local blood flow, reduced neurogenic inflammation, and effects on immune signaling. Studies have examined markers such as immunoglobulin E, interleukins, and inflammatory cells, but laboratory changes do not always correspond to meaningful symptom relief. It is therefore more useful to view biomarker findings as supportive evidence rather than proof of a particular mechanism.
The quality of the acupuncture literature remains uneven. Blinding is difficult because patients may recognize whether needles are being used, and sham procedures are not physiologically inert in every design. Small sample sizes and differences in point protocols also make it difficult to compare one trial directly with another. Acupuncture may be a reasonable adjunct for some patients, but current evidence does not justify presenting it as a replacement for medically indicated allergy care.
Herbal Medicine And Combined Treatment
Chinese herbal medicine is studied through individual formulas, modified prescriptions, and combinations of herbs selected according to a traditional pattern. Research has explored formulas intended to reduce nasal discharge, support respiratory function, regulate inflammatory responses, or address recurrent symptoms. Some trials report improvements in symptom scores and quality of life compared with placebo or conventional treatment alone.
The evidence for herbal medicine is harder to summarize than the evidence for acupuncture because formulas are not standardized across studies. Even when two trials use formulas with similar names, the ingredients, dosages, preparation methods, and modifications may differ. This variation reflects individualized practice, yet it reduces reproducibility and makes broad claims difficult.
Laboratory and early clinical studies suggest that some botanical compounds may influence mast-cell activity, cytokine signaling, oxidative stress, or the balance of immune responses. These findings are scientifically interesting, but a mechanism observed in cell culture or an animal model cannot establish that a finished formula will relieve symptoms safely in humans.
Combined acupuncture and herbal treatment may address several aspects of care at once: immediate nasal discomfort, recurrent episodes, sleep disruption, and an individual’s broader pattern of health. However, few high-quality studies isolate the contribution of each component. A positive result from combined care supports the package being studied, not necessarily every acupuncture point or every herb used in clinical practice.

Patient-reported outcomes deserve attention. A modest change in a nasal symptom score may be meaningful if it improves sleep, reduces missed work, or allows a person to exercise comfortably. Researchers should report both statistical significance and clinical significance, including the size and duration of benefit.
Safety, Quality, And Interactions
Acupuncture is generally considered low risk when performed by a qualified practitioner using sterile, single-use needles. Temporary soreness, bruising, lightheadedness, or minor bleeding can occur. Serious complications are uncommon but possible, especially when needling is performed by someone without appropriate training or when relevant medical conditions are not disclosed.
Herbal products require a separate safety assessment. Risks may involve allergy, contamination, incorrect species identification, excessive dosing, liver or kidney effects, or interactions with prescription medicines. A formula that is appropriate for one patient may be unsuitable for another because of pregnancy, anticoagulant use, hypertension, autoimmune disease, or other health factors.
Patients should provide a complete list of medicines, supplements, and diagnosed conditions before beginning treatment. This includes antihistamines, corticosteroids, asthma medicines, blood thinners, sedatives, and immunomodulating drugs. Herbal treatment should come from a practitioner trained in Chinese herbal pharmacy and able to identify reliable products and monitor response.
Acupuncture and herbs should not delay evaluation of warning signs. Persistent one-sided nasal obstruction, recurrent nosebleeds, facial swelling, fever, severe sinus pain, breathing difficulty, or a sudden loss of smell may require conventional medical assessment. A person with asthma should also maintain an established asthma action plan rather than treating respiratory symptoms solely through complementary methods.
Making Treatment More Individual
A useful care plan begins with a clear assessment. The practitioner may ask whether symptoms are seasonal or year-round, identify likely triggers, review sleep and digestion, and note medication responses. Allergy testing can help determine whether pollen, mites, mold, or animal dander is involved. This information allows complementary treatment to sit within a more accurate diagnosis.
Acupuncture protocols may focus on local points around the nose as well as distal points selected according to the person’s overall presentation. Sessions are commonly scheduled as a course rather than a single intervention. Progress can be tracked through daily symptom ratings, medication use, sleep quality, nasal breathing, and exposure patterns.
Herbal treatment may be divided conceptually into an acute phase and a prevention-focused phase, although the exact approach depends on the patient. A formula used during a flare may differ from one prescribed between allergy seasons. Practitioners may also modify ingredients as symptoms change, which is consistent with traditional practice but makes professional follow-up essential.
Simple self-care remains valuable. Saline nasal rinsing can help clear allergens when performed with appropriately prepared water and clean equipment. Washing the face and changing clothes after outdoor exposure may reduce pollen contact. Bedroom allergen control, ventilation, and attention to indoor humidity can be useful for people with perennial symptoms. These measures work alongside, rather than compete with, acupuncture or herbal care.
A Practical Evidence-Informed Framework

- Obtain a medical diagnosis when symptoms are new, severe, persistent, or accompanied by asthma or recurrent sinus infections.
- Choose a licensed acupuncturist or qualified Chinese herbal practitioner with training in allergy-related care and medication safety.
- Set measurable goals, such as fewer nighttime awakenings, less reliance on rescue medication, or improved nasal airflow.
- Review herbal ingredients with a physician or pharmacist when taking prescription medicines, preparing for surgery, or managing pregnancy or chronic disease.
- Continue effective conventional treatment unless a qualified medical professional recommends a supervised change.
A coordinated plan also makes it easier to identify what is helping. Starting several new supplements, stopping prescribed medicine abruptly, and changing environmental exposures at the same time can obscure the results.
